Lars Trägårdh, Professor of History at Ersta Sköndal University College in Stockholm, said Sweden’s election-winning Social Democrats would have to rely on “a very unwieldy coalition”, warning that the country faces a “very messy” political situation.

The professor believes the current right-wing government has been “a victim of its own success”, as Swedes now appear to be seeking to give the country a “kinder face”.

He said voters want to “keep in place” reforms carried out by current Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, whose government has been highly dependent on the far-right, anti-immigration Sweden Democrats, while also seeking to restore Sweden’s image as the “moral superpower that they have been in the past”.
