Fans of British singer Bonnie Tyler received good news on Tuesday, when the star’s team announced that she had woken from the induced coma she was placed in more than a month ago at the hospital in Faro, in Portugal, where she lives.
However, the singer’s team said on social media that Tyler, whose real name is Gaynor Hopkins, remains in a “very serious condition” and is still in intensive care.
The 75-year-old artist, who comes from Wales, underwent emergency surgery for a perforated intestine on 30 March and was then put into an induced coma to help treat a widespread infection that developed after the operation. More recently, she suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest, from which doctors managed to revive her.
Bonnie Tyler, who has for several years divided most of her time between the United Kingdom and Portugal, shot to fame in the 1980s with songs such as “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero”, earning multiple multi-platinum records. In 2023, she was awarded the Order of the British Empire by the Prince of Wales.
In March, before falling ill, she played a short tour in the United Kingdom, with concerts in London, Manchester and Cardiff, and also released a new single titled “Only Love”.
