At least four people including a young child have been killed and over 50 injured after the US resumed strikes against Iran on Tuesday. According to the Iranian Red Crescent, shrapnel from a US missile attack hit a residential home where a wedding was taking place in the coastal city of Kuhestak, in Sirik county of Hormozgan province. The United States has yet to comment on the incident.
It comes several hours after the US military announced it was launching strikes on Iran, quashing hopes that an exchange of fire last ⁠weekend might not presage a ⁠wider renewal of hostilities. US Central Command said it was striking targets in Iran over attempted attacks on shipping and against US service members in the region. Explosions were reported in several locations across southern Iran.
Donald Trump warned that if Iran retaliated against the US’s latest strikes, “they will be hit again at a much harder and higher level, but it will not be the biggest attack of them all, that is waiting in the wings and, when it is over, there will be very little left of the Islamic Republic of Iran.” That very ominous last part is starkly reminiscent of threats Trump has made in the past that could amount to war crimes if carried out. He added that the strikes were “in retaliation” for Iran’s “failed attempt” to lay mines in the strait of Hormuz and for Iran’s (retaliatory) attacks on the US military base in Jordan (which were intercepted).
In a call with Fox News, Trump reportedly reiterated that Iran would be “totally wiped out” if it launches retaliatory strikes against the US. “This is a very big hit today. If it goes a third time, they’re going to be totally wiped out as a country,” Fox News quoted the US president as saying.
In response to the attacks, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had begun a “regretful response to the aggressors”, state broadcaster IRIB reported. And IRGC spokesperson Sardar Mohebi said in a post on X that “severe punishment” awaited the aggressors and that the US “will regret its new attacks”.
Jordan’s army said that 10 out of 13 Iranian ballistic missiles were intercepted and the other three fell in remote areas. It followed claims from the IRGC that it had killed “a large number of US forces”, while destroying “several installations and enemy attack helicopters” in a ballistic attack on US Marines’ barracks at Camp Titin, a military site near Aqaba. Reuters and Al Jazeera have since both reported, citing US sources, that there were no injuries or damage to the barracks.
A reminder that this phase of fighting began when the US military said it had struck rocket launchers on Larak Island in the strait of Hormuz on Sunday, in its first strikes on Iran since July, after it detected the Iranians were planning to deploy fresh mines in the critical waterway. Tehran responded by launching missiles at US sites in Jordan, which were intercepted, and the United Arab Emirates, which said it had stopped an Iranian drone over its territorial waters. Trump had threatened further action on Monday, telling Fox News: “We’re going to hit them hard. There will be a response.” These strikes, 24 hours after Trump’s comments, are that response.

Meanwhile, in a statement, the Jordanian army has said it intercepted 10 of the 13 ballistic missiles that entered the kingdom’s airspace, while the remaining three fell in remote areas, away from population centres.

Two US officials have countered those claims, telling Reuters there were no US casualties from Iran’s attacks on facilities in Jordan so far.

IRGC claims attack on US military barracks in Jordan

The IRGC has claimed that it killed “a large number of US forces”, while destroying “several installations and enemy attack helicopters” in a ballistic attack on US Marines’ barracks at Camp Titin, a military site near Aqaba, Jordan.

In a statement, carried by Iranian broadcaster IRIB, the IRGC said its retaliation would continue.

The Iranian state broadcaster IRIB shared video footage showing extensive debris and damage at what it said was the site of the wedding in Sirik following the US strike, with rescuers rushing through the scene and people heard screaming in the background.

Sirik death toll rises to four including child, says Iran Red Crescent

The Iranian Red Crescent said that four people including a child were killed and over 50 people were wounded by a US attack while attending a wedding in the south.

“Following a US missile attack, shrapnel hit a residential home in the city of Kuhestak, in Sirik county of Hormozgan province, where a wedding celebration was taking place,” the Red Crescent said in a post on X.

“More than 50 people were injured and four people, including a young child, were martyred.”

The US has yet to comment on the attack.

IRGC says ‘regretful response’ to US attacks has begun

A short while ago, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had begun a “regretful response to the aggressors” amid the fresh US attacks on southern Iran, state broadcaster IRIB reported.

In a statement, the IRGC said that “in blind and desperate attacks”, the US had bombed several locations, including civilian areas. It went on:

At least two people killed at wedding in US attack on Sirik, Iranian state tv reports

At least two people were killed and several others wounded at a wedding in the coastal city of Bandar Kuhestak in Iran’s southern Sirik county during the US attacks, Ahmad Nafisi, deputy governor of Hormozgan province, told Iranian state television in a phone call.

“A residential home was attacked while people were holding a wedding ceremony,” Nafisi said, adding that “two people were reported martyred and a number of others wounded”.

The situation at Jiroft airport in Iran’s Kerman province is “under control”, a deputy governor said in comments carried by Iran’s Fars News Agency, after a US projectile landed outside the airport’s runway.

There were no casualties or damage to airport structure, he said.

Iran may target 'Americans throughout the world', US says in new travel alert

Renewed tensions between Iran and US forces have prompted heightened travel alerts for the Middle East.

In a post on X, the US state department said:

“Due to tensions in the Middle East, the security environment remains complex with the potential for unforeseen escalation. Americans currently in the Middle East should exercise heightened vigilance and be aware of potential flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions.”

The advise, covering all countries in the region, is similar to that given during previous points of heightened conflict with Iran. It also warns Iran and its supporters may target US interests “and Americans throughout the world, including US businesses and other institutions”.

Fars news agency, quoting the governor of Kerman province, said the attack caused “no casualties and did not damage the runway or the airport buildings.”
