Rio devotees celebrate Zé Pelintra Day with music, dance and prayer

Dozens of devotees gathered in Rio de Janeiro's Lapa neighbourhood to celebrate Ze Pelintra Day, honouring one of the best-known figures in Afro-Brazilian religions.

The footage shows worshippers lighting candles, praying beside an altar surrounded by beer cans, and singing, dancing and playing drums and tambourines throughout the celebration.

Ze Pelintra is a popular spiritual entity in Afro-Brazilian religious traditions, where he is often associated with protection, street wisdom, bars and gambling. His image has become a familiar symbol in Rio, attracting followers who leave offerings and gather for annual celebrations.

The celebration reflected the continuing presence of Afro-Brazilian beliefs in the cultural and spiritual life of Rio de Janeiro.
