Saint Pierre and Miquelon: France’s tiny outpost that relies on Canada

The visit by French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has brought renewed attention to Saint Pierre and Miquelon, a small French archipelago just off the coast of Newfoundland.

Despite being French territory, the islands rely heavily on Canada for supplies, transport and trade. The only major supermarket receives deliveries from Canada once a week and stocks up to eight weeks of goods.

Local fishermen also depend on Canadian processing plants for seafood including snow crab, scallops and sea cucumber.
