Eight nights ago, the footballing world enjoyed an scintillating Champions League semi-final, with Paris Saint-Germain dominating Bayern Munich in a match that ended 5-4 to the hosts.
The high stakes of the match would normally have forced the teams to be much more cautious, but the quality of the players brought a different outcome. Tonight's semi-final in Munich will decide not only who will reach the final in Budapest, but also whether a "haunted" football record will be broken.
Record of most prolific attack in the Champions League
With the Parisians having scored 43 goals and the Bavarians following with 42, Barcelona's record from the 1999/2000 season of 45 goals seems destined to be broken. It is also the first time in the history of the competition that two different clubs have broken the 40-goal barrier in the same season.
Paris Saint-Germain: 43 goals and one goal away from Barcelona
PSG moved within touching distance of Barcelona's historic record after their thrilling 5-4 victory over Bayern Munich in the first semi-final. It was in fact their 15th game in this year's competition.
Luis Enrique's side have consistently shown an explosive attacking presence: they scored five goals against Chelsea in the round of 16 and against Tottenham in the league phase. Their most impressive performance, however, came on Matchday 3, when they thrashed Bayer Leverkusen 7-2 in Germany.
Kaiserslautern's record broken
Kravatchkellia is the PSG's top scorer with ten goals, while Vitinha and Dembele also made a significant contribution with six goals each, and Désiré Doué with five. Remarkably, 10 of the team's total of 43 goals came from players coming off the bench, breaking the previous record for the competition held by Kaiserslautern from the 1998/99 season.
Bayern: On 42 goals and on the verge of breaking the record
As was the case with Barcelona last season, Bayern Munich finished the league phase in second place, recording seven wins in eight matches and scoring a total of 22 goals.
However, Vincent Kompany's side noticeably upped the pace of their "attacking machine" in the knockout stages, starting with a dominant win over Atalanta by a combined score of 10-2 in the round of 16.
This was followed by two impressive high-intensity games: a 4-3 win over Real Madrid in the quarter-final rematch and a spectacular 5-4 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the first semi-final.
Harry Kane's record
A total of 12 different players have found the net for the Bavarians, with Harry Kane standing out as his 13 goals are the most ever scored by an English player in a single UEFA Champions League season. Luis Diaz is also in excellent form, having scored in four consecutive appearances to take his tally to seven goals in the competition, while Michael Olise has already scored five.
