Wildfire in northern Spain burns 330 hectares and forces evacuations

The fire that broke out on Friday in the parish of Herbón, in Padrón (A Coruña), remains active and has already burned nearly 330 hectares. The regional government has declared a level 2 emergency and around ten homes are still evacuated.

The wildfire was declared on Friday at 16:01 in the parish of Herbón, in the municipality of Padrón, and continues to spread, with firefighting teams still unable to bring it under control. According to the latest official estimates, the flames have already affected around 330 hectares of land, a figure that has been rising over the last few hours.

The mayor of Padrón, Anxo Rei Arca, confirmed that the fire has crossed the municipal boundary and entered the area of Teo, moving in the direction of Vilar do Bispo. This spread into a second municipality is complicating coordination efforts and widening the area at risk for local residents.

The entire hamlet of Cruxeiras de Abaixo was evacuated after ten homes were deemed to be at risk. The evacuation took place in the early afternoon and, by around 20:00, residents had still not been allowed to return.

Wind and heat hamper firefighting efforts

Although on Saturday morning the fire appeared to be moving towards stabilisation, the high temperatures, above 30°C, and the wind made conditions more difficult as the day went on. "There is quite a lot of wind, which we didn't have in winter," the mayor of Padrón said, describing the behaviour of the fire.

The reactivation of one of the fronts forced the firefighting operation to be reinforced. The response involves technicians, forest rangers, ground crews, water tenders and heavy machinery, as well as aircraft coordinated between the regional government and the Ministry for Ecological Transition, which has deployed amphibious planes and a helicopter.

As an additional measure, the Civil Guard informed the 112 emergency service that traffic had been cut on two roads: from the parish of Carcacía to Padrón and from Vilar do Bispo to Lampai, in Teo.

No injuries, but maximum vigilance

So far, the authorities have reported no casualties or damage to homes, although the proximity of the fire to several population centres is keeping the alert level high. The regional Department for Rural Affairs has pre-emptively activated level 2 emergency status as a protective measure for the population.

This fire comes against a backdrop of growing concern about forest fires in Galicia. The regional government has set the high-risk wildfire period for 2026 between 1 July and 30 September, although the possibility of extending it into October remains open.

Galicia's wildfire plan for this year, Pladiga, aims to ensure that no more than 29,207 hectares burn over the whole year, in light of the impact of last year, a target that the Padrón blaze on its own is already starting to erode significantly.
