Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced on Saturday that he will resign in the coming weeks and called for early presidential and parliamentary elections.

“I will be president for only a few weeks, and then I will resign,” Vučić told supporters at a rally in Belgrade. His second and final term was due to expire in mid-2027.

The announcement comes after a year and a half of student-led protests, sparked by the collapse of a railway station canopy in Novi Sad in northern Serbia, which killed 16 people.

The protesters have been demanding early elections.

Vučić said he would help his party, the Serbian Progressive Party, secure victory in the upcoming votes, including snap parliamentary elections originally scheduled for next year.

He did not specify the exact date of his resignation or when parliament would be dissolved, a necessary step for holding early legislative elections.
