At least one person was killed Monday when a man opened fire at the Teotihuacan pyramids, a key Aztec archaeological site and one of Mexico's most popular tourist attractions. The perpetrator later took his own life.
Authorities have identified the victim who was fatally shot as a Canadian woman.
"What happened today in Teotihuacán deeply pains us. I express my most sincere solidarity with the affected individuals and their families. We are in contact with the Canadian embassy," Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo wrote in a statement on X.
"I have instructed the Security Cabinet to thoroughly investigate these events and provide all necessary support. Personnel from the Secretariat of the Interior and Culture are already heading to the site to provide assistance and accompaniment, along with local authorities".
