Iran and Oman agree route for ships in Strait of Hormuz, Tehran says

Iran has agreed a route with Oman to allow the passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, the Iranian Foreign Ministry announced on Wednesday.

"The geographical coordinates of the route proposed by both sides have been agreed upon, and provided certain third parties do not obstruct the process, the joint statement of the two countries, which includes the main points of agreement, is also in the final review and drafting stage," Esmail Baghaei, a spokesperson for the ministry, said, per Iranian state media.

Baghaei reportedly said talks with Oman were “professional” and “moving forward" but warned that safe passage could not be guaranteed to all vessels traversing the waterway due to what he said were ongoing "destabilising factors" such as the US naval blockade of Iran and "other aggressive and threatening actions against Iran and its interests."

The Strait of Hormuz has been a major sticking point in negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

The waterway, a crucial energy transit chokepoint that carries roughly a quarter of the global seaborne oil trade, was effectively closed by Iran after US and Israeli strikes in late February, sparking wild swings in energy markets.
