Berta López Domènech, an analyst at the European Policy Centre, said this is the first time an alternative to Serbia’s current leader, Aleksandar Vučić, has “real options” ahead of Sunday’s snap elections.

Over the past two years, Serbia has witnessed “the largest protests this century”, López Domènech said. Whether the Student List can topple Vučić will become clear next week, but polls currently point to a “very tight result” and “very high participation”.

Serbia, an EU candidate country, has seen its path towards EU membership stall since 2021. Since then, there has been “no progress” and even “backsliding on fundamental issues”, López Domènech said.
