A mass of hot, dry air coming from North Africa will cross the Iberian Peninsula between 10 and 14 June, causing a sharp rise in temperatures on mainland Portugal, according to the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
Already today, the Day of Portugal, Camões and the Communities, temperatures will rise to between 25 and 35 °C, which is normal for this time of year and just days before the calendar start of summer, with the solstice scheduled for 9.24 am on 21 June.
From the 11th onwards, a sharper rise in temperatures is expected, of around 10 degrees centigrade in some areas. Values could reach 45 °C.
The 12th, the eve of St Anthony’s Day, will be the hottest, with maximum temperatures ranging from 35 to 40 °C across most of the country. Minimum temperatures are also expected to rise throughout the country, with some places likely to see values close to or above 20 °C through the night of the 13th to the 14th.
So if you are heading to the Lisbon festivities, wear light clothing and comfortable shoes, and do not forget to keep hydrated.
IPMA also explains that the heat will feel more intense because of the "weakening of the wind", which will "significantly increase the feeling of heat".
These high temperatures are expected to last until Saturday, 13 June, with a slight drop in temperatures forecast from the 14th. Until then, IPMA will keep the country under a yellow heat warning.
