Karabakh has long been associated with musical traditions that form part of a wider cultural heritage. Mugham, an improvisational art form combining modal structure and vocal expression, is closely linked to the region.

Another tradition, ashiq music, blends poetry, storytelling and performance, accompanied by traditional instruments. Musicians say international festivals and performances contribute to the continued development of these forms.

Both mugham and ashiq traditions are recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritages. Today, performers continue to interpret these styles for new audiences while maintaining established practices.
