Summer heat returns to Spain this weekend with 90 km/h gusts in Cádiz

Temperatures will rise across Spain this Friday to levels more typical of July. A strong easterly will batter the Strait under orange alerts, and storms will hit inland areas on Sunday.

Temperatures are rising this Friday across Spain, especially in the northern half of the mainland, which had enjoyed a brief respite. Thermometers will return to July-like values: tropical nights are back in Alicante and Jaén, and Madrid and Toledo will lose their cool early mornings as minimum temperatures climb back to 20 ºC.

The main weather feature of the day will be the Levante wind in the Strait of Gibraltar. AEMET has issued orange alerts in the province of Cádiz for gusts of up to 90 km/h, with seas up to force 8 west of Tarifa and south of Cape Trafalgar. In Empordà and the Canary Islands, by contrast, winds will ease compared with recent days.

A weekend of sunshine and storms

Saturday will start out sunny, although with a few isolated afternoon storms in Galicia, western Castile and León and Asturias. Temperatures will keep climbing: 35 ºC will be reached in parts of the Cantabrian region, Galicia and Castile and León, while the valleys of the Guadiana and Guadalquivir will be close to 40 ºC.

On Sunday the picture changes. An intrusion of cold air at high altitude, similar to a DANA but without fully developing into one, will increase instability over the interior of the mainland from midday onwards. Storms, which may be accompanied by very strong gusts of wind, will be most likely in inland Galicia, Asturias, Castile and León, Extremadura and Castile-La Mancha. The eastern mainland, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands will remain largely unaffected.

A hotter-than-usual June

The week of 15 to 21 June will get off to an unsettled start: clouds will build from midday with possible showers inland, most likely on Monday. Despite this, temperatures will remain above what is normal for the time of year, with full-on summer heat particularly marked in the centre and north of the country.

From the week of 22 to 28 June onwards, the outlook becomes more uncertain. Forecasts suggest that the heat will continue, although less intense, with no clear trend in terms of rainfall. By the end of the month and the beginning of July, the pattern could settle into a typically summer regime: warm with little rain.
