Mid-summer heat returns to Spain this weekend with July-like temperatures

Temperatures are on the rise this Friday across Spain, especially in the north of the peninsula, which had enjoyed a brief respite. Thermometers will return to values more typical of July: tropical nights are back in Alicante and Jaén, and Madrid and Toledo will lose their cool early mornings as minimum temperatures climb back to 20ºC.
The main weather feature of the day will be the easterly wind in the Strait of Gibraltar. AEMET has issued orange weather alerts in the province of Cádiz for gusts of up to 90 km/h, with force 8 seas to the west of Tarifa and south of Cape Trafalgar. In the Ampurdán and in the Canary Islands, by contrast, winds will ease compared with recent days.
A weekend of sunshine and storms
Saturday will start off sunny, although with a few isolated afternoon storms in Galicia, western Castile and León and Asturias. Temperatures will continue to climb: 35ºC is expected in parts of the Cantabrian region, Galicia and Castile and León, while the Guadiana and Guadalquivir valleys will come close to 40ºC.
On Sunday the outlook changes. An influx of cold air at high altitude, similar to a DANA-type cut-off low but without fully developing into one, will increase instability over the interior of the peninsula from midday onwards. Storms, which may be accompanied by very strong gusts of wind, will be most likely in inland Galicia, Asturias, Castile and León, Extremadura and Castile-La Mancha. The eastern side of the peninsula, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands will largely be spared.
A hotter-than-normal June
The week from 15 to 21 June will begin unsettled: clouds will build from midday with possible showers in inland areas, more likely on Monday. Despite this, temperatures will remain above what is usual for the time of year, with full-on summer heat particularly intense in the centre and north of the country.
From the week of 22 to 28 June onwards the outlook becomes more uncertain. Forecasts suggest that the heat will continue, although less intensely, with no clear trend in terms of rainfall. By the end of the month and the start of July, the pattern could settle into a typically summer regime: warm with little precipitation.
