Video and photos published by local media shows a man standing with a gun on top of a pyramid while people duck for cover. A number of gunshots ring out in the videos.
An armed man standing atop one of the historic Teotihuacán pyramids opened fire on tourists Monday, killing one Canadian and leaving at least 13 people injured at the archaeological site north of Mexico’s capital, authorities said.
The attacker later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officials said seven people were shot, while witnesses reported further injuries caused by falls as visitors tried to escape.
Victims were taken to hospital, including tourists from Colombia, Russia and Canada. Their conditions were not immediately clear. Footage shared by local media shows the gunman on the pyramid as shots ring out and people seek cover.
President Claudia Sheinbaum said the shooting would be investigated and expressed solidarity with victims. Canada’s foreign minister Anita Anand confirmed one Canadian was killed and another wounded.
