Trump "governs by executive order," as "an aspiring authoritarian", says acclaimed American historian Allan Lichtman. The 13 Keys author speaks to Euronews, questioned on Trump's tactics and expectations for the upcoming midterm elections in the US.
He warns that Americans should be "very much prepared" if US President Trump attempts to overturn the results "by any means at his disposal", given the President's poor polling ratings and potential effects on the Republican Party's results. He adds that historically, a US president with such poor polling loses "about 40 House seats and 6 Senate seats" on average - but with the visible enthusiasm for the Democratic Party, the midterms look to be a "good election" for the Democrats.
He further warns that given a potential loss at the midterms that Trump may govern by executive order "even more aggressively" than seen previously, and that those who believe in US democracy "need to be even more vigilant" in the last 2 years of the Trump term.
The USA will have mid-term elections to re-elect part of the Senate and all of the US House on 3 November 2026.
